The remarkable city of Lancaster, California, is a charming community with a rich history and heritage. Historians are uncertain how Lancaster received its name, but believe it was either Mr. M. L. Wicks, a real estate developer, or Mr. Purnell, a member of the Southern Pacific Railroad, who named it. Regardless, the city wouldn’t exist had it not been for the completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad running between Los Angeles and San Francisco beginning in 1876. Because of the railroad, by 1890 Lancaster had grown considerably and continued to do so when gold was discovered in the hills north of the city in 1898.
Despite having such a long history, Lancaster was not officially incorporated until 1977. This beautiful charter city is nestled in northern Los Angeles County and surrounded by the beauty of the Antelope Valley of the western Mojave Desert. Lancaster is the 31st largest city in the state and sits approximately 70 miles north of downtown Los Angeles in sunny Southern California. Together with Palmdale, Lancaster is the one of the principal cities of California’s High Desert and the Antelope Valley region. Situated near the Kern County line, Lancaster is separated from the San Joaquin Valley and Bakersfield by the Tehachapi Mountains to the north, and from the Los Angeles Basin by the San Gabriel Mountains to the south.
At its incorporation Lancaster was home to around 37,000 residents but today approximately 168,100 call Lancaster home. Lancaster is a great choice for retirees, young professionals, families and everyone in between. The area is served by the Eastside Union School District, Westside Union School District, Lancaster School District and the Antelope Valley Union High School District. Composed of 94.5 square miles, Lancaster has diverse real estate options consisting primarily of single family homes of varying ages, sizes and architectural styles. While some larger and more luxurious single family homes in Lancaster can cost as much as $1.8 million, the average listing price for a single family home in Lancaster is just $349,600.
